I’m sitting at an oil station having my oil changed. I wonder if my need to change the oil extends beyond my car. Maybe I run too often on the old oil of the Holy Spirit. I’ve noticed that sometimes my innards feel gritty and full of friction. The weight of the day only makes things worse.
I also have to admit it’s been a while since I’ve changed the oil in my car. Busy days, you know. Turns out I use the same reasoning for a spiritual oil change. Just too busy to pause.
This I know: if I’m to be a good husband, a loving father, a helpful pastor, and even a descent friend, my spiritual oil needs a regular cleansing. I need a fresh Word from God. My internal engine has to be scrubbed.
So if my car runs most efficient with an oil change every three thousand miles, how long should my spirit go?
