Today is becoming very icy in the D/FW area. Unfortunately I’m making the 3 hour drive to College Station in about 15 minutes for an evening class. I expect the roads to be a little tricky this afternoon, but worse this evening–on the way home.
Technology is a necessary tool in this situation. For me, technology allows two things to happen: Information, Distraction
On the way home this evening, I expect to be using my iPhone to stay engaged with weather predictions. I’ll be able to access my local weather station website and have a very clear understanding of the road conditions. Technology will enable me to make well-informed decisions about slowing down or pulling over. Without this, I’ll be stuck with radio reports covering several hundred square miles. I’m really only concerned about the few hundred feet ahead. Technology will allow me to gauge those yards.
While I understand I need to stay focused during my driving today, I also know that my mind will wanders. The iPhone has the iPod already installed so I can listen to podcasts about topics of interest during the long drive. If anything, this will help me to remain more focused, because as my mind processes the podcast, my alertness increases. Daydreaming is the danger zone. For me, this happens with a disengaged mind.
So the use of technology will assist me in remaining focused and safe on potentially treacherous streets today.
Prayerful,
RB
