I don’t hear God for a living. I hear God to live.
Often, though, it seems like my ear grows deaf–almost like I can’t hear anything. What am I left to do in these moments?
I’ve learned to recognize the voice of my wife. I can hear her laughter from across the room and distinguish her voice among the cacophony of many even when I can’t see her. When our eyes meet, I can tell when she wants to say something and I can often read her body language without ever hearing a word that she says. However, there are times when she tries to tell me something but I am too far away to hear. We try to communicate using hand signals without success. Sometimes I just can’t grasp what she’s trying to say.
I’ve learned the best solution is to simply move closer so that I can hear her better. She never stopped talking. I just changed my position so her words became more clear.
God never stops talking to us. When we can’t understand him, maybe we should move closer to Him rather than asking that He increase the volume.
