One of the things we teach at Gateway Equip is how to hear the voice of God. It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often. I think it’s so important that I’ve made a life objective out of helping others hear His voice. I really do believe God is constantly speaking. But, like you, I’ve had those moments–and sometimes even seasons–when it feels like God is silent. What should we do then?
When my wife and I are having a conversation, words are just one of the ways we communicate. I can tell her I love her with my words, but I can also say it with my eyes. I can describe disappointment with a sentence, but I can also share it with an expression.
When we talk about hearing the voice of God, we tend to think about it in terms of words. But what if God chooses to use non-verbal communication? If all I’m looking for are words, then I’ll miss what He’s saying.
So what would non-verbal communication from God look like?
When I’m not hearing God’s “voice” I should probably start looking for other ways God may be communicating.
1. What are the feelings I’m experiencing?
2. What are close confidants saying to me?
3. What are my dreams at night filled with?
I would have a poor relationship with my spouse if I ignored her non-verbals. Perhaps the same is true of my Savior.
What kinds of non-verbal communication have you experienced from God? How would you coach someone to pay attention to those non-verbals. Be sure to comment here!
