I’ve recently run across an exciting new tool in social networking. It’s really not all that new, but I’ve just stumbled upon it. It’s the website www.youversion.com. It combines aspects of social networking with a person’s devotion time.
By going to the website and creating an account, a user can click on a meaningful verse of the Bible and leave a comment on the Scripture’s personal impact. That comment can be private or public. Looking over the sight, I think its great how people are interacting with each other about Scripture.
Here are some dangers I see:
1. How is bad theology managed? While many under the “Christian” banner have different views, there are opinions that fall outside of the boundaries. Will bad theology be dealt with by other users? Will that account be disabled? Will that post be deleted? I’m curious to see how bad theology is handled.
2. How will malicious users be dealt with? If a user posts borderline comments that are intended to injure or harm another user, what will happen?
3. If I want something private, how secure is it? Bank level security? How sure can I be that what I write stays locked away?
4. If this concept explodes are the resources in place to manage the exponential growth? If they can’t, and the website ends, what happens to my private writings?
While these issues give me pause for concern, they won’t keep me from interacting on the site. Hopefully I’ll see you there! Look for user: robbbrewer.
